"We drive people to treatment if needed and will help with anything people need assistance with who are going through cancer treatment," Traci Cliffman, a Vernon County Cancer Relief board member said Friday.

In the past this included things like gas cards for transportation, electricity, and groceries.

Cliffman said in the last year they had driven seven people to cancer treatments, including one who made 125 trips to treatment.

"All of our money stays local. Nothing goes out of Vernon County," she said, adding that VCCR is not affiliated with Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society.

Providing those services takes money and this Saturday VCCR will be holding one of two fundraising dinners scheduled each year. These dinners as well as memorials and donations are the source of VCCR's operating funds.

Cliffman said Saturday's dinner would be brisket, salad potatoes, green beans, roll and dessert.

She said that with only 350 tickets available the dinner will sell out, but there could be tickets available at the door on Saturday.

Sometimes people buy tickets and then are unable to use them and turn them in to be sold at the door.

In addition to the dinner Cliffman said they will have celebrity waiters who collect tips that go to VCCR. The waiter who collects the most in tips will receive a trophy.

This year's waiters includes many local politicians as well as other local celebrities like Megan Mason, Stacy Anderson, Cory Johnson, Andy Smith, Bill Steward, Jennifer Gundy and Kelly Ast.

There will also be items donated by local businesses and individuals that will be sold at auction or drawn for, she said.

Vernon County Cancer Relief is a non-profit, charitable, tax-exempt organization, which was founded Sept. 23, 1987 by Jody Renwick, with the help of the Finis M. Moss Charitable Trust.

Cliffman said that the organization is run by a volunteer board of directors.

"We are all volunteers, our satisfaction comes from knowing we are helping someone," she said.

The organization has an eight member board of directors: Jamie Vantellman, president, Jeremy Fast, vice president, Lori Chadd, treasurer, Ranea Schulze, secretary, Butch Renwick, Linda Gower, Becky Butterfield and Traci Cliffman.
